Painting Kitchen Cabinets: The Prep That Decides Whether the Finish Lasts
Cabinet paint succeeds or fails before the color goes on. Learn how cleaning, repairs, sanding, primer and cure time shape a durable kitchen finish.
Kitchen cabinet paint lasts when the doors are removed, every surface is degreased, weak finishes are repaired, the right primer is used, and the new coating is allowed to cure before normal kitchen use. Skipping any of those steps can leave a finish that looks good at first but chips around handles, stays soft under bumpers, or peels where cooking residue was trapped underneath.
Cabinets are not ordinary walls. A wall mostly needs to look even. A cabinet door gets pulled, touched, wiped, bumped and exposed to steam every day. That repeated contact makes surface preparation and coating hardness more important than the color itself.
Start by deciding whether the cabinets are worth painting
Paint changes the finish, not the construction. It can refresh sound wood, medium-density fiberboard, and many factory-finished doors. It cannot correct a failing cabinet box, swollen panels, loose joints, broken hinges or a layout that does not work.
Inspect the doors and boxes before choosing a color. Look closely at the sink base, the cabinet beside the dishwasher, and the doors above the cooktop. Those areas show moisture and grease damage first. A door with a small nick can be repaired. A fiberboard panel that has absorbed water and expanded may never return to a flat, crisp edge.
The existing finish matters too. If it is firmly bonded, it can often become the base for a new coating after cleaning, dulling and priming. If it flakes under a fingernail or releases in sheets, painting over it only attaches the new finish to a weak layer. That old failure has to be removed or stabilized first.
Label every door before anything comes apart
Cabinet doors that look interchangeable often are not. Openings vary slightly, hinges are adjusted to a particular position, and one door may have been trimmed to clear an appliance or wall.
Remove the doors, drawer fronts, pulls, knobs and hinges. Mark each door and its opening with a simple code that will survive cleaning and painting. Bag the hardware by section rather than putting every screw into one container. This turns reassembly into a controlled step instead of a puzzle.
Painting doors while they hang creates familiar defects. Paint bridges the gap around hinges, pools at lower edges, misses the back side, and gets rubbed before it has hardened. Removing them allows each face and edge to be prepared evenly.
Kitchen grease is an adhesion problem
Cabinets collect a film that ordinary dusting does not remove. Cooking oils aerosolize, settle on doors and mix with household dust. Hands add skin oils around pulls and door edges. Silicone polish can leave a residue that resists coatings.
That contamination is often invisible until primer separates or forms small craters. Clean first, before sanding. Sanding a greasy surface can grind contamination into the old finish and spread it across a larger area.
Use a cleaner that is appropriate for the substrate and rinse away any residue it leaves. The goal is a clean surface, not a chemically wet one. Pay special attention to recessed profiles, corners, the area above the range and the edge beside the trash pullout. Allow the cleaned material to dry fully before moving on. Moisture trapped in seams or around profiles can interfere with sanding and primer.
Sanding is about grip, not stripping every door bare
On a sound existing finish, sanding usually has one job: remove gloss and create a uniformly dull surface that primer can grip. It should also feather repaired chips so their edges do not show through the finish.
Aggressive sanding can create new problems. Veneer can be thin. Factory edges can be easy to round over. Routed profiles can lose their sharp definition. The correct amount is enough to remove shine and weak material without changing the shape of the door.
Dust removal matters after sanding. Vacuum the profiles, seams and hinge cups, then wipe the surface with a method compatible with the primer. Dust left at a panel edge becomes grit under the finish. Dust blown around the room can settle back onto a wet door later.
Primer has to solve the problem in front of it
Primer is not one universal middle coat. One cabinet may need adhesion over a hard factory finish. Another may need stain blocking over wood tannins or an old water mark. A third may need both.
Test the primer and topcoat system on a small door or the back of a removable panel. Let the sample dry, then check adhesion and appearance. A sample can reveal bleed-through, poor bonding, an unexpected texture or a color that looks different under the kitchen’s actual light.
If the cabinet material is unknown, the test is more useful than a guess. It also shows whether the existing finish reacts to the new product. A compatible system should dry evenly and remain attached when handled as directed by its manufacturer.
A cabinet coating needs different performance than wall paint
Wall paint is designed to cover broad, relatively still surfaces. Cabinet doors need a finish that levels well, resists blocking where painted parts touch, and hardens enough for repeated cleaning and handling.
Sheen affects the look, but sheen alone does not determine durability. A product formulated for trim and cabinetry can outperform a general wall coating at the same sheen. Compare the product data for hardness, recoat time, cure expectations and approved substrates rather than choosing from the sheen name alone.
Color changes how defects read. Deep colors show dust and scratches differently than white. Very light colors can reveal stain bleed. A sprayed finish can look smoother, but it also demands careful masking and dust control. A rolled or brushed finish can be excellent when the coating levels well and the applicator keeps a wet edge.

Thin, controlled coats beat one heavy coat
Heavy application looks efficient until the coating sags in a profile, stays soft at an edge or skins over while the film beneath remains wet. Cabinet doors have many places where excess material can collect: inside corners, routed details and lower rails.
Apply the coating at the spread rate and conditions on its product data. Maintain the recommended temperature, ventilation and humidity. Sand between coats only when the system calls for it and when the prior coat is ready. Rushing the recoat can trap a soft layer under a harder surface.
Door racks and drying space need to be planned before coating starts. Finished pieces should not be stacked, leaned face-to-face or laid where dust and overspray can reach them.
Dry to the touch is not ready for full use
A newly painted door may feel dry while the film is still gaining hardness. Reinstalling pulls, tightening bumpers and wiping the surface too early can leave rings, imprints and polished spots. Closing two freshly coated surfaces against each other can make them stick.
Follow the coating manufacturer’s cure guidance, not just its dry-to-touch time. Rehang and adjust doors carefully. Use the kitchen gently during the early cure period. Avoid aggressive cleaners, damp towels hanging over doors and prolonged steam against the finish.
This is especially important on the Gulf Coast, where humid air can slow waterborne coatings. Air conditioning and controlled ventilation help, but they do not replace the product’s required cure time.
The finish should be maintainable after the project
Record the manufacturer, product line, color, sheen and batch information. Keep a small, tightly sealed amount for future touchups and label which cabinets it belongs to. That record is far more useful than a color name alone.
Clean the finished surface with nonabrasive tools and a mild method approved for the coating. Repeated hard scrubbing can burnish some sheens and make one spot look glossier than the surrounding door. Fix leaks and failed caulk instead of asking paint to resist continuous moisture.
The visible coat is the last part of a cabinet-painting job, not the first.
